Community Description

Čara is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Korčula.
This ancient village of winegrowers with about 700 inhabitants is located 25 km from the town of Korčula along the main island road. It was built on the southern slope of the hill, under which there is a large, fertile field with vineyards. A special type of grape - Pošip - is grown there. There is also a wine cellar and an agricultural cooperative that produces the famous wine of the same name.

In the center of the village by the road stands the parish church of St. Petra from the 15th century, rebuilt several times, and its bell tower was completed in the 1980s. On the main altar is the painting Christ Appearing to the Apostles by the prominent Venetian Renaissance artist Jacopo Bassano from the end of the 16th century. In the small paved square in front of the church, a centuries-old large cypress grows. As in the other settlements of the island, here in the nearby sea cove Zavalatici were fortified summer houses of Korčula landowners and nobles.

In the field in the middle of the vineyard is the local old and new cemetery with the votive church of Our Lady of Tsarskoe Polje from the 14th century, which got its current form in the Baroque. On her altar, there are frescoes with relief scenes from the life of the Virgin. Those Late Gothic alabaster (once painted) reliefs of English origin - the Nottingham workshop from the 15th century, according to tradition, were washed up by the sea in the nearby Čavića bay, and there is also a legend about their miraculous arrival in Čara. The church is the central pilgrimage shrine of the island of Korčula: on the feast of St. On July 25, there is a great celebration here, when the image of the Virgin Mary is carried from the altar in a votive procession that goes around the entire Čarsko polje, and is followed by a large number of regiments from the entire island. In Čara, there is a cultural and artistic association Braća Črnomiri, named after the legendary brothers who once upon a time bravely fought for the rights of serfs against the Venetian nobility and princes.

In addition to agriculture, the population is engaged in tourism. In the nearby southern bay of Zavalatica (2 kilometers along a nice road) there is a series of modern family pensions built right next to the coast.
