Community Description

Gornje Selo is a village on the island of Šolta, in the Split-Dalmatia County, in the south of Croatia.

Its geographical position is 43° 21' north latitude and 16° 20' east longitude.

Medieval rural village, located at the foot of Gornji polje. In the center of the village is the church of St. John the Baptist, which was built by local knight Marin Bavčević, born in Gornji Selo in 1791. Next to the church is the "Brotherhood of St. John the Baptist" building. On the way to Stomorska we will find two votive chapels. From Gornji Selo to the shrine of Our Lady of Stomorija or Our Lady in Bori or the Virgin Mary (Our Lady with Child, painting on wood with baroque silver fittings, work of the local school of the 15th/16th century), there is a road next to which there are several crosses. Around the church is a cemetery with parts of an ancient sarcophagus, and next to the church are the graves of the brotherhood. From the sanctuary, a field path (500 m) leads up the hill to the Vela straža and the Cross, which is placed at the very top. It is the highest peak on the island, which, with its 237 meters above sea level, has the role of an observation deck. The Starine fortress with two towers originates from ancient times, it is located at the foot of Vela straža, not far from Gornji Selo, near the shrine of Our Lady in Bori. It is assumed that the center of Gornji Selo was once there.
Gornje selo is connected to the entire island by an asphalt road. Buses Prometa Split on regular lines connects Gornje selo with Stomorska, Nečujma, Grohote, Srednji Selo, Donji Selo, Maslinica and Rogač, where the main ferry port for Split is. From Gornji Selo to the surrounding bays, you can reach it by macadam road, by bike or on foot.
