“Supetar is really the right place for an ideal holiday…a charming sun in the front of which the blue strand unwinds like a ingenous innocence of a girl….and in the evening, a deep peace…in the heart of that poor soil and ungrateful stone, there is a moment of a high and passionate domestic poetry, a source of beauty that invites to stop….so many stars whose flickers are discreet….peace is entering into my being…”. These are words used by Tin Ujević in 1929 to describe Brač and Supetar. Today, Supetar is town with more than 4000 inhabitants, breathing the original Dalmatian way of life. But that marvellous peace, event today in another form, is still present. Those who once visits Supetar, always wants to return.



Supetar is a real island town and the biggest Brač’s village. A real heart of the island located in its northern part. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring this beautiful, diverse and very interesting island. Supetar is also administrative, cultural, economic and touristic centre and has a very good ferryboat connection with Split.

Once Supetar was port leading to Nerežišća – historical island’s capital in the inland. Name Supetar (from St Peter) was mentioned for the first time in 1423 whilst current urban features got during the 17th and 18th century when he got inhabited by Donji Humac inhabitants. In 1997 was granted a City status.



The Supetar area covers nearby places: Mirca, Splitska and Škrip.

Supetar abounds with points of historical heritage which is not surprising as its history goes back to the period of Roman emperors. The aforementioned is proved by remnants from 6th century: Early Christian mosaic close to the Parish church and villa rusticate at the St Nicholas promontory, close to the town beach Banj.



Take a walk to the town cemetery and visit the Petrinović family mausoleum, work of art of Tomo Rosandić and continue to the viewpoint above Supetar from where extends a magnificent view on Brač Channel and visit one of 19 preserved Early Romanic churches on Brač, a small church of St Lucas.



If you decide to go toward Vidova gora, through a pine forest and enjoy tasting blackberries growing aside you will reach Trolokve and might encounter a small herd of horses. This is an interesting location with three watering places, once an important public property.



The most important sight and pride of Supetar is Ivan Rendić (1849 – 1932), its most famous artist, the first important sculptor with education background in art, considered the father of modern Croatian sculpture.



His beautiful memorial collection can be found in Ivan Rendić Gallery, situated in the very centre of Supetar and close to the waterfront, above the National Library. Besides in Supetar, works of art of this great figure of Croatian sculpture can be found in Trieste, Venice, Rijeka, Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Koprivnica whilst the work of art that we have to mention is the church bell in Ložišća, island of Brač.



Besides visiting collection, spend a “Day with Rendić” – is a cultural tour taking you through the most beautiful parts of Supetar where you can see works of art and inheritance of this famous person from Supetar.
